700 policemen to receive training in ICT

Seven hundred policemen from six divisions of the country will undergo training in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) under the aegis of United Nations Development Programme (UNDP). The five-day training as part of the Police Reform Programme (PRP) commenced at first in Dhaka Division Sunday. The programme will be run in phases in other five divisions -- Chittagong, Rajshahi, Khulna, Barisal and Sylhet, according to the UNDP. A 10 per cent quota of the trainees has been reserved is for women police officials. According to the budget of the UNDP, the overall project cost for the PRP Phase II is estimated at US$29 million with a view to improving the security and capacity building of the police force in the country. Marking the training programme, an inauguration ceremony was held at Chhayanaut Sangskriti-Bhaban in the city Sunday. Inspector General of Police (IGP) Hassan Mahmood Khandker inaugurated the training programme as the chief guest while Additional Inspector General of Criminal Investigation Department (CID) Md Mokhlesur Rahman, Additional Inspector General (Resources) Syed Shah Zaman Raj, Assistant Country Director of UNDP-Bangladesh Young Hong and Project Manager of the training programme Henk van Zyl were present on the occasion. Hassan Mahmood Khandker said this initiative will help the police department to be modern and contribute more to ensuring security in the country. Addressing the trainees, he said, "You should take the training as part of your duty, and beyond the profession it will also help improve your personal life". He, however, said the main objective of the programme is to impart ICT knowledge to filed-level police officers.
