BARISAL, Oct 25 (UNB): Additional 70,000 tonnes of Hilsha is expected to be produced next season as Hilsha fishing remained stopped for 10 days from October 15 in four points of 7,000 square kilometres coastal areas following government ban.
Deputy Director of Fisheries Department of Barisal Sheikh Ashraf Ali said some 130,000 tonnes of Hilsha had been produced in the last season and over two lakh tonnes are likely to be produced this season due to the imposition of the ban.
Fisheries Directorate imposed the ban on fishing Hilsha for 10 days in four points of 7,000 square kilometres coastal, estuary and river areas to ensure safe breeding of Hilsha.
The four points included Shaherkhali to Haitkandi point under Chittagong district in northeast, Uttar Kutubdia to Gondamara point under Cox's Bazar district in southwest, Uttar Tazumuddin to Paschim Syed Awalia point under Bhola district in northwest and Latachapli point of Kolapara Upazila under Patuakhali district in southwest point.
Fisheries directorate, district and Upazila administrations, navy, coastguards, police and other law enforcing agencies monitored the proper execution of the restriction.
As the fishermen abstained from fishing in these four points for 10 days thousands of Hilsha laid eggs safely.
