72,696 complete voter registration in Rangpur municipality

RANGPUR, Aug 30 (BSS): A total of 72,696 people of Rangpur municipality got their all formalities completed, including photography and fingerprinting by Friday evening, to register themselves as voters and to get national identity cards (NICs).
The third phase of the registration process in ward numbers 7, 8, 9 and 10 began Friday morning at 15 more computerised centres where more 8,189 people completed their all formalities for the purposes on the day, officials said Thursday.
The pilot project for voter registrations with photographs and preparing the NICs is progressing fast in the municipality with the spontaneous participation of common man, officials and local people said.
Election Commissioner M Shakhawat Hossain will visit Rangpur tomorrow (Friday) to observe the ongoing process of the voter registrations at several computerised centres.
He will also attend a view-exchange meeting with local civil society members, and senior military and government officials' conference hall of the deputy commissioner of Rangpur at 5:00 pm tomorrow, the officials said.
The voter registration started on August 19 and would continue until September 13 at the 86 centres to enroll about 0.18 million (1.8 lakh) people of all 15 wards in the municipality as voters to complete the pilot project through distribution of the national identity cards from September 28 to 30.
A total of 566 enumerators are collecting data under the supervision of 123 supervisors and 15 assistant registration officers, and 350 computers have been installed at the 86 centres.
Besides, 15 officials and 65 trained personnel of the Armed Forces have also been engaged in completing the task in time.
The authorities have undertaken adequate measures for enrolling the elderly and handicapped voters under special arrangements and many of them are being registered every day, the officials said.
A record number of people were seen in queues at all 15 centres Thursday for registering themselves as voters under the computerised system being run by the expert teams of the Armed Forces.
People, who could not be enrolled themselves as voters within the scheduled time, are also registering themselves as voters under special arrangements at the central database and registration centre, and the process will continue until the last date, the officials said.
