79,000 die of TB a year

FE Report | Sunday, 29 June 2008

Speakers at an orientation session said that Tuberculosis (TB) is a major public health problem in Bangladesh. Over 340,000 people develop TB each year of whom 79,000 die in the country.

They appealed to the participants to be more conscious about the disease and disseminate what they have learnt through this training to at least 10 fellow workers, neighbours, relatives and friends during their social conversation. Consequently this would help make most of the people in the country aware of TB.

The half-day orientation on DOTS (Directly Observed Treatment, Short Course) was held at Lalbagh in the city. The session was organised jointly by National TB Control programme, DGHS, MOH and FW, and LIFE, a UN associated NGO.

Amanullah Khan, chairman of UNB attended the programme as the chief guest while Kamrul Islam Sony, founder and executive director of LIFE presided over the function.

Among others, Dr Md Harun or Rashid, deputy programme manager, NTP, Akram Uddin Thakur, director, Mohammadi Designers Ltd, and garment worker Salina spoke on the occasion.
