8 killed as two buses collide in Narsingdi

NARSINGDI: At least eight people were killed and 58 others injured as two buses caught fire after a collision on Dhaka-Sylhet highway at Amtala in Shibpur upazila Wednesday afternoon.
Two of the deceased were identified as Swarna Akther, 17, an HSC student of Siddheshwari Girls’ College in the capital, and Majnu Miah, 75, of Raipura upazila of the district, according to a news agency.
The fatal accident took place when a Dhaka-bound bus of ‘Shohagh Paribahan’ from Brahmanbaria collided with a Bhairab-bound bus of ‘Meghalaya Paribahan’ from Dhaka, said officer-in-charge of Shibpur Police Station Imam Hossain.
The OC said the two vehicles burst into flame, leaving three people dead on the spot and 60 others injured.
The injured were taken to Narsingdi General Hospital where five people succumbed to their burn injuries.
Of the injured, 30 people, including four with burn injuries, were sent to Dhaka Medical College Hospital as their condition deteriorated.
