8 ministers, 6 MPs barred from leaving country

FE REPORT | Friday, 30 August 2024

Eight former ministers and six members of parliament from the ousted Awami League government have been prohibited from leaving the country following a mass uprising by students and the public.
The order was issued by Dhaka Metropolitan Sessions Judge As-Sams Jaglul Hossain on Thursday in response to a petition from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC Public Prosecutor Mahmud Hossain Jahangir confirmed the matter to the FE.
The ministers who have been restricted from leaving the country are: former Health Minister Zahid Maleque, former Social Welfare Minister Dr Dipu Moni, former Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury, former Food Minister Sadhan Chandra Majumder, former Industries Minister Nurul Majid Mahmud Humayun, former State Minister for Industry Kamal Ahmed Majumder, former Minister Shahjahan Khan and former Minister Kamrul Islam.
The members of parliaments ( MPs) who are subject to the travel ban are: former MPs Salim Uddin, Mamunur Rashid Kiran, Kujendra Lal Tripura, Kazim Uddin, Nur-e-Alam Chowdhury and Ziaur Rahman.
The ACC's Deputy Director Abu Hena Ashikur Rahman filed the petition seeking the travel ban on these ministers and MPs.
The petition stated that the former ministers and MPs from various constituencies of the previous government are accused of amassing unimaginable illegal wealth through various irregularities and corruption.
Reliable sources have indicated that these individuals might flee the country to escape investigation. The travel ban is necessary to ensure a fair investigation.
