8 people sentenced for killing BNP leader in Khulna

KHULNA, June 2 (UNB): A tribunal here on Monday sentenced two people to life term imprisonment and six others to different terms for murdering BNP leader and UP chairman of Satkhira district Arifuzzaman Chanchal.
The lifers M Nurul Islam and Mohitosh alias as Dada Mohitosh were also fined Tk 20,000 each.
Five other convicts - Humayun Kabir, Rabiul Sardar, Showkat Ali, Sudhangsu and Jahidur Rahman - who were given 14 yeas jail term were also fined Tk 10,000 each, in default, to suffer one year RI more.
Another convict Jobeda Khatun who was sentenced to five years imprisonment was also fined Tk 5,000.
According to the prosecution, a gang of robbers swooped on the house of Dhandia union parishad chairman and BNP leader Arifuzzaman in Satkhira at mid night on October 7, 2008 and abducted him at gunpoint after looting valuables.
Later, police recovered his body from a nearby pond next morning. A case was filed in this connection with the local police station.
Later, the case was shifted to Khulna Divisional Speedy Trial Tribunal.
After examining the records and witnesses tribunal Judge M Sekandar Ali handed down the verdict.
Another report from Gaibandha adds : A tribunal here on Monday convicted a man and sentenced him to life term imprisonment in a rape case.
The court also fined the convict M Harunur Rashid, son of Munsur Ali of Taraf Pahari village in Sadullapur Upazila Tk 5,000, in default, to suffer six months more RI.
