80,000 proscribed notebooks seized

Friday, 25 December 2009

KHULNA, Dec 24 (UNB): Some 80,000 pieces of notebooks and guidebooks of different classes from Class VI to IX were seized from a private depot at Helatala in the city Thursday, as the government has proscribed these made-easies.
Acting on a tip-off, a special team of RAB-6 raided a go-down and recovered the unauthorised books worth about Tk 0.1 million.
None was arrested in connection with this clandestine commerce in education.
On December 10, 2007, the education secretary issued a circular asking the deputy commissioners across the country to take action to prevent publication, sale and distribution of notebook or guidebook not approved by the National Curriculum and Textbook Board for the students of primary and secondary levels.
Aggrieved at the government step, the Book Publishers and Sellers Association (BPSA) filed a writ petition challenging the validity of the notification before the High Court (HC) in February last year.
The Supreme Court on December 9 upheld the High Court judgment prohibiting the publication, sale and distribution of these books.
