822 factories yet to pay May wages

Some 822 industrial units, including readymade garment factories, across the country under the jurisdiction of Industrial Police (IP) did not pay wages for the month of May until Wednesday.
A total of 9,915 units, including textile, garment and jute, located in Dhaka, Gazipur, Chattogram, Narayanganj, Mymensingh, Khulna, Sylhet and Cumilla are operating under the authority of IP.
Only 10 per cent or 989 out of the 9,915 factories have paid festival allowance while only 62 industrial units paid wages for the first 15 days of June until Wednesday noon, according to IP data.
A total of 136 garment factories associated with Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) out of its 1,624 units and 73 out of 699 BKMEA (Bangladesh Knitwear Manufacturers and Exporters Association) member units did not pay May wages.
