The Special Cell for the Mass Uprising has released the first draft list of 858 people killed and more than 11,000 injured during the student-led mass uprising in July and August, reports bdnews24.com.
The announcement was made in a statement signed by Additional Secretary Khondker Zahidul Islam, head of the special cell, on Saturday.
According to the statement, the draft list is being published as the first step toward finalising the list of martyrs and injured individuals from the July-August uprising.
The draft list will remain open to the public until Dec 23 and can be accessed on the special cell's website (https://musc.portal.gov.bd).
The website shows that the list includes the names of 858 deceased individuals and 11,551 injured.
Earlier, on Sept 29, the Health Directorate's Management Information System, or MIS, released a list of 717 people killed in the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.
At that time, the Health Services Division issued a public notice requesting family members, heirs, or representatives of any martyrs whose names were missing from the list to contact the relevant deputy commissioner, civil surgeon, Upazila Nirbahi Officer, or Upazila health and family planning officer with proper evidence.
The student movement demanding the abolition of quotas in government jobs, began in June, intensified by mid-July.
On Jul 16, six people, including Rangpur's Abu Sayed, were killed in police firing, turning the movement violent.
The anti-discrimination movement evolved into a one-point demand for the government's resignation. Facing intense student and public protests, Sheikh Hasina resigned as prime minister and left for India on Aug 5.
After the interim government took office, the health ministry formed a committee on Aug 15 to prepare a list of those killed and injured in July and August. The committee is led by former secretary of the health services division Muhammad Humayun Kabir.
On Sept 9, after receiving the committee's report, the health ministry said at least 631 people had been killed and over 19,200 injured nationwide during the anti-discrimination movement.
That was the initial list.
However, on Sept 28, the central subcommittee on health for the anti-discrimination movement claimed that 1,581 people had died during the period.
At a press conference held at the Dhaka University Teacher-Student Centre, or TSC, auditorium, organised by the central health subcommittee for the Anti-discrimination Student Movement, the National Citizens' Committee, and other stakeholders, it was reported that over 31,000 students and civilians were injured during the movement.
This data, however, required further verification.
In the latest announcement on Saturday, it was mentioned that the Health Services Division, Health Directorate, district committees in 64 districts, and the special cell for the mass uprising are working together to finalise the list of martyrs and injured individuals.
After nearly two and a half months, the draft list has been published. The special cell has requested feedback from family members, heirs, or representatives of the victims to verify, amend, and finalise the list.
Anyone with opinions, suggestions, or information about additions or corrections to the list has been asked to send them to the special cell's email ([email protected]) by Dec 23.
