8th B’desh Int'l Cancer Congress starts in city

The 8th Bangladesh International Cancer Congress began in the city on Thursday - to share the progress made worldwide in cancer treatment.
Oncology Club, the Bangladesh Chapter of the SAARC Federation of Oncologists (SFO), is hosting the two-day conference, where leading scientists and physicians along with cancer survivors are participating.
A total of 47 famous cancer specialists from 11 countries along with some 900 cancer researchers from across the world have joined this event.
The conference is providing a forum to refresh knowledge regarding progress in medical science and advances in cancer treatment around the world, the organisers said in the inauguration ceremony at a city hotel. The forum has become a place to meet and interact with the leading scientists and physicians involved in cancer management, which provides delegates latest information on developments of cancer management.
A special session on young investigators and interactive session on different common cancers of this region are arranged in the conference, covering an array of special topics of interest to young investigators, the organisers also said.
The number of cancer patients in the country is increasing day by day due to unhealthy food taking and irregular lifestyle. Food adulteration and air pollution are also blamed for the situation by cancer experts. Two and a half million people are getting cancer-affected every year in Bangladesh. Prof Dr M A Hai, Chairman - Oncology Club Bangladesh, addressed the opening session.
He said the increasing number of cancer patients in the developing countries including Bangladesh is alarming. A large population in the country is currently affected by this disease, most of whom are beyond the reach of treatment.
