90,435 Bogra farmers incur Tk 3,000 million losses due to flood

BOGRA, Sept 07: Around 90,435 poor and marginal farmers of eight upazilas of Bogra district have faced losses over Tk 3,000 millions in this season due to severe flood visiting from the first week of July.
According the deputy commissioner (DC) office source, 2, 35,333 people of 58447 families at 400 villages of 39 unions as well as 4 municipality under eight upazilas of Bogra district have been affected as the furious flood rushes several times elsewhere the area. The authority concern temporarily make an idea that the farmers faces over Tk 3000 million loss for damaging crops land, DC office added.
Farmer Abdul Awal, 33, under Sariakandi upazila said, he has cultivated some twelve bighas of T-Aman paddy spending Tk 1, 20,000 aiming good profit in the first week of August. But, all of the cropland has been gone under water and rottened, he added.
"I have cultivated some 23 decimal of land under pointed-gourd cultivation spending Tk 4600 in the basin of Jamuna last July," said farmer Mukul Hossain under Dhunot upazila of the district. He again said, "I have lost the intention to be self-reliant from the crops as a furious flood rushed at the night and damaged my crop totally."
In a recent visit to Dhunot upazila the correspondent found the people have taken shelter at high place to save the life losing their dearest ones across the upazila. They are crying for the relief material. The academic progress of some government primary and high school has been halted.
Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) office said, prospective greens of some 22685 hectares of land has inundated totally among them some 22140 hectare of weaving T-Aman, 75 hectares of T-Aman seedbed, 470 hectare of green vegetable have been damaged in this season. The farmers should be given agricultural incentives immediately, DAE added.
Deputy Commissioner (DC) Nur-e-Alam Siddique said, "We have started rehabilitation work after receding flood water across the area. The service will reach rapidly from door to door within a very short time," he added.
