Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina Wednesday told the Jatiya Sangsad (JS) that about 911 megawatt (mw) electricity would be added to the national grid by June this year, reports BSS.

In addition to this, 960mw electricity would be added to the national grid by the end of 2012 under short and medium term plans, she added.

During the question-answer period in the House, the Prime Minister said her government had undertaken plan to add about 2,135mw power to the national grid by 2014 under a long term plan.

She said 746.5mw power would be added to the national grid by June this year from independent power plants (IPPs) and 165mw through overhauling of the Karnaphuli Power Plant in Chittagong and Khulna and Ghorashal power plants.

The Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina said her government would take initiative to implement the Ruppur Nuclear Power Plant and forge a regional cooperation with neighbouring countries to resolve the power crisis.

She said 176mw power would be produced by June 2009 from the IPPs in Feni, Moheepal, Barabkunda, Maona, Rupganj and Jangalia and 214.5mw electricity from the plants in Bhola, Bogra, Fenchuganj, Ashuganj and Shikalbaha which were installed under a three-year contract.

Besides, the national grid would get additional 356mw electricity by this time from the plants installed under 15-year contract.

Replying to a question from Nazim Uddin Ahmed, a BNP lawmaker from Laxmipur-1 constituency, the Prime Minister said the present government would explore all methods including solar energy, hydropower, biogas plant, wind and nuclear power to produce electricity to reach power to every villages of the country.

In view of this, the government had already waived the tax on import of all kinds of solar panel, she said.

The Prime Minister said according to a master plan of 2006 the country's expected demand of power in 2009, 2015 and 2020 were 6,066mw, 9,786mw and 13,993mw respectively.

To meet the demand and maintain a reasonable reserve of the electricity, Hasina said the government had undertaken plans to construct adequate number of new power plants by 2014 under short-, medium- and long-term programme.

The Prime Minister said the government would construct a 360-mw power plant in Haripur, two 150-mw power plants in Siddhirganj, one 125-mw power plant in Boropukuria, one 450-mw power plant in Bheramara by 2014.

Besides, the two private power plants -- one of 450mw in Bibiyana and other of 450mw in Sirajganj -- would be constructed.

Replying to a supplementary question from Awami League lawmaker Tofail Ahmed, she said the government would upgrade the 34.5-mw power plant in Bhola to 150mw as available gas was discovered in the coastal island.

Responding to another question from JSD lawmaker Hasanul Haq Inu, the Prime Minister said the government would try to reduce dependence on gas to produce electricity and promote hydropower, solar and nuclear energy.
