93 nabbed, 60 injured in dists as Jamaat, ICS protest leaders' arrest

Activists of Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir (ICS) clashed with police and BCL in different towns and cities following the arrest of the top Jamaat leaders, resulting in arrest of 18 and injury to about 25, report agencies.
At least 20 activists were injured in a clash between Bangladesh Chhatra League (BCL) and ICS at Baroirhat Bazar in Mireshwarai police station of Chittagong Tuesday night.
Of the injured, Shimul, Arif, Mohsin, Redwan, Sumon, Mamun, Noman, Masud, Rezaul Karim, Khokon, Anwar Hossain and Faruq Islam were rushed to local hospitals.
The police and local people said the BCL intercepted a procession of Jamaat activists who protested against the arrest of three top leaders at Baroirhat Bazar.
The BCL and ICS locked in a clash using lethal weapons that left at least 20 activists from both groups injured.
The police rushed to the spot and quelled the situation. Additional police were deployed in different areas of the city including Chakbazar, Dewan Bazar and Andarkilla to avert any untoward incident.
The police kept the local Jamaat and ICS offices under surveillance.
In Savar, the police detained seven Jamaat activists while they were organising a demonstration in Savar Bazar bus stand area Wednesday afternoon.
At least 25 leaders and activists of Jamaat were injured as the police unleashed batons to disperse the gathering.
In Narayanganj, the Jamaat activists brought out a procession to protest against the arrest of its leaders Tuesday evening.
The police charged baton to disperse the procession, leaving at least five Jamaat activists injured.
In Khulna, the police picked up 21 leaders and activists of Jamaat and ICS while they were preparing to bring out a procession in the city Wednesday.
Khulna district Ameer Prof Mia Golam Parwar, a former lawmaker, among others was arrested.
Our Jessore correspondent adds: The police arrested 12 ICS activists from different parts of the town Tuesday night.
The police picked them up while they were in deep sleep at dead of night. The arrested activists alleged that the police woke them up to arrest.
The police said they arrested the ICS activists suspecting probable attempt by them to make the situation unstable.
The arrested ICS activists are Habibur Rahman, Hasanul, Tauhid, Abdus Salam, Khalid, Shafiqul, Akram, Farhad, Parvez Ahmad, Delwar Hossain, Baharul Islam and Jahidur Rahman.
In Mymensingh, the police arrested four leaders of Jamaat including two upazila Ameers of Trishal and Gouripur with sharp weapons, while they brought out a procession in the town Wednesday morning.
In Noakhali, the activists of Jamaat and BCL locked in clashes in the district town Wednesday, leaving 10 persons injured.
The police arrested 18 Jamaat leaders and activists including the district Ameer Abdul Monaem from near Mofiz Plaza in the town while they were returning after staging demonstrations.
In Comilla, the police charged baton on a procession of Jamaat activists in the town Tuesday evening and arrested Shahidullah, a Jamaat leader from the procession.
In Pirojpur, the police arrested three Jamaat activists in the district town Wednesday while they were preparing to bring out a procession.
Former Jamaat Ameer of the district Omar Faruq, among others, was also arrested.
In Jhalkathi, the police arrested five ICS activists at about 6pm Tuesday when they were preparing to bring out a procession to protest against the arrests.
In Natore, the police in separate raids arrested 10 leaders and activists of Jamaat from different parts of the district Tuesday night.
The police said that they were arrested for their alleged involvement in various criminal activities.
Four other Jamaat activists were arrested from different parts of Bagatipara Upazila in the district.
In Pabna, Jamaat activists brought out a protest procession in the town Tuesday evening. The police cordoned off the Jamaat office in the town.
Meanwhile, the police arrested 12 leaders and activists of Jamaat including the secretary of municipality unit of the party from different areas of Chapainawabganj town between Tuesday and Wednesday, allegedly for barricading roads at different points following arrests of their central leaders.
The police filed two separate cases against Razzak, Hatem, Mofijul, Monnaf and Rabbani under Speedy Trial Act and produced them before the Judicial Magistrate's Court Wednesday. The court sent them to jail.
Officer-in-Charge of Chapainawabganj Sadar police station Ahsanul Haque said the Jamaat activists put barricade on the Chapainawabagnj-Sonamasjid Highway in Mohananda Bridge area Tuesday night disrupting communication.
Jamaat activists also put barricade on roads in different areas of the district town, he added.
