9,976 nomination papers submitted for UZ polls

A total of 9,976 candidates submitted nomination papers for the upcoming upazila polls in different posts against 481 upazilas across the country, reports BSS.
Saturday was the last date for submission of nomination papers, Election Commission (EC) sources said.
Of them, 4,222 submitted nomination papers for chairmen posts, 3,543 for vice-chairmen posts and 2,211 for female vice-chairmen posts, Senior Assistant Secretary of EC Abdul Baten told the news agency here Sunday.
The highest number of 2,590 nomination papers, he said, were submitted in Dhaka division, while the lowest number of 746 nomination papers were submitted in Barisal division.
In Rajshahi division, 2,396 nomination papers were submitted for the polls, 1,211 in Khulna division, 764 in Sylhet division and 2,269 in Chittagong division.
In Rajshahi division, 1,018 nominations were submitted for chairmen posts, 823 for vice chairmen posts and 555 for female vice chairmen posts.
In Khulna division, 521 candidates submitted nomination papers for chairmen posts, 424 for vice chairmen posts and 266 for female vice chairmen posts.
The number of candidates for the posts of chairmen in Barisal division was 325, for vice chairmen 245, and for female vice chairmen 176 posts.
In Dhaka division, 1,122 nominations were submitted for chairmen posts, 891 for vice chairmen posts and 577 for female vice chairmen posts.
In Sylhet division, 279 nominations were submitted for chairmen posts, 314 for vice chairmen posts and 171 for female vice chairmen posts.
In Chittagong division, 957 nominations were submitted for chairmen posts, 846 for vice chairmen posts and 466 for female vice chairmen posts.
The scrutiny of nomination papers will be held on December 17, 18 and 19 by the returning officers in the concerned areas.
The last date for the withdrawal of candidature is December 31 and the election will be held on January 22.
