A bumper onion production on way in Gopalganj

GOPALGANJ, Jan 28: Onion growers of five upazilas in Gopalganj district are hopeful of a bumper production of it due to favourable weather condition and timely supply of agro-inputs this season.
A total of 1757 hectares of land have been brought under onion cultivation here with a production target of 14,056 metric tonnes this season, Department of Agriculture Extension (DAE) sources said.
According to sources 450 hectares of land have been brought under onion cultivation in Gopalganj Sadar Upazila, 900 in Muksudpur Upazila, 350 in under Kasiani Upazila, 50 in Tungipara Upazila and 7 hectares in Kotalipara Upazila in Gopalganj district.
Ashit Kumar Saha, Deputy Director, Agriculture, Gopalganj, told the F.E. special initiatives have been taken to cultivate different varieties including Taherpuri onion for producing a record quality of the crop.
Bangladesh Agriculture Development Corporation (BADC) has taken necessary measures to provide the farmers with high yielding varieties (HYV) of seeds, fertilisers, insecticides and other inputs for making the programme a success.
At the same time, government and other private commercial banks have been providing loans among the poor, small and marginal farmers in the district.
Md. Ashraful Mina (32) a farmer of village Kongshoor under Korpara union of Sadar Upazila in the district said, "I have cultivated the onion on five bighas (260 decimal) of land spending Tk 5,00,000 and I expect Tk 2,50,000 as profit if the weathers condition remains favourable".
