A business magnate with a difference

Zaglul Ahmed Chowdhury reviewing the book | Friday, 18 April 2014

Syed Ragib Ali is no stranger in the realm of business and commerce in Bangladesh since he is a leading figure in this field. His presence is felt in many branches of trade and industry - ranging from tea plantation to banking. The elderly person is a self-made business magnate; he has traversed a long way in reaching the zenith of his pursuit of a successful businessman. He began his quest at both home and abroad. Now at a quite ripe age, he oversees his vast business world with great satisfaction. His efforts to promote business further have not, however, slackened. It is praiseworthy, indeed. His accomplishments help the country economically.
What is more important and laudable is that Syed Raguib Ali believes that the growth and expansion of trade and business is not merely a personal feat, but it goes a long way in promoting the interestĀ  of the people at large.
Muhammad Abdul Quadir has ventured to portray the life of a person who stands taller than many others in the philanthropic field. Syed Raguib Ali is a respected figure in the country for multi-faceted contributions he has made for the uplift of the socio-economic conditions of the people.
The author, a freedom fighter, was a college teacher and government official and is now a freelanceĀ  journalist and columnist. He has told the story of Syed Ragib AliĀ  in verse in the book Bangadanobir Syed Ragib Ali. Mr. Ali has wonderfully related Syed Ragib Ali's business accomplishments to his noble philanthropic programmes. Not only in his native Sylhet region, Ragib Ali has extended his activities to many other areas of the country for promoting education and health that benefit a large number of people. Mr. Quadir has mentioned the Ragib Ali Foundation that is dedicated for encouraging journalism, literature, music etc. He has noted the innovative outlook of Mr. Ali whose establishments include university and hospitals. Such institutions are run by the foundation named after him and his late wife Rabeya.
The book carries plenty of photographs and descriptions of the institutions established by Mr. Ragib Ali. The writer has depicted Mr. Ali as "a great institution".
Even though the book may sound like a narration of personal achievements, it is justified for the simple reason that here is a leading businessman of the country, whose identity as a prominent person in his professional field is far eclipsed by his extraordinary philanthropic activities. Many people feel that his great zeal for the welfare activities should be recognised by the government as well.
The 96-page book contains valuable information and photographs. This book is useful, particularly in the sense that it would encourage other wealthy persons to undertake philanthropic activities.
