A day in the classroom
Friday, 17 April 2009
I am studying in a reputed government school in Rajshahi. There are 61 students in my class. I am describing a day in my class. My class starts at 2 pm.
Our math teacher enters the class around 10 minutes late. He checks our home work in the class. Our class captain collects the home work and keeps them ready on his desk before his arrival. We sit idle as he checks the homework. Then our class captain gives us back our exercise books. It take around 30 minutes. After that he gives us three sums on the blackboard and instructs us to solve them individually. As we try to solve the sums, the bell rings. He leaves the class.
The English teacher comes within minutes. He collects an English book from us to read aloud from the Chapter 7. Some of my friends tell him "Sir, we are on the Chapter 8". He reads out a few lines from Chapter 8.
Within minutes, a person enters the classroom and our English teacher goes away with the stranger asking our class captain, "Write down the names of the students who make noise". Just before the bell rings, he reenters the classroom only to leave as soon the bell rings.
A female teacher teaches us Bangla. She comes to the classroom a few minutes late and asks us one by one to read a poem. Then she asks us to memorise it at home. She goes away after the bell rings.
Another female teacher teaches us sociology. She writes down three questions on the blackboard and instructs us to tear out a sheet from our exercise books to write the answers on it. She takes the sheets and leaves the classroom five minutes after the bell rings. That's all for a day one.
Everyday we waste much of our time in the classroom. So, why do we go to school? Is it only to show that school is doing its job! The school only takes the terminal exams!
I have a private tutor for English but not for maths. I am really worried about maths. A friend of men have maths tutor. But he has no English tutor. He is worries about English.
We don't like our school. But we have to go school everyday. Otherwise our names will be struck off the class roll. We have no leisure time to play. At play time we have to go to our private tutor's house. Some of our friends have go to the coaching centres.
My grand father tells me that during their student days if they did not understand something, they used to go to the teacher's common room after the class hour when the teachers explained to them the lesson they did understand. Everyday in the afternoon, they got the timing to play in their playground.
Please save us and give us the time to play!
