Economists see the proposed national budget for the forthcoming fiscal as "a development-friendly budget," but have said the allocations on 'social empowerment' should give top priority on employment generation to give the economy a further boost.
"It's a good thing that the government has expanded the social safety net. But it should focus more on job creation," said Hossain Zillur Rahman, who heads the non-government organisation, Power and Participation Research Centre (PPRC).
Giving his instant reaction to the proposed budget (2007-08), Rahman said expansion of social safety net would not contribute to growth unless resolute steps are taken to generate more jobs.
