'Monpura', a local film released February 13 last, is expecting to make a record turnover in the country's film history as it has already earned more than Tk 20 million within a few weeks.
Beder Meye Josna, released in early 1990s, made Tk 60 million net profit followed by Priya Amar Priya at Tk 50 million released in 2008, Abuj Mon, also a hit film did a business worth Tk 20 million in early 1980s.
"We got a massive response from the viewers soon after releasing the film, We expect to have a turnover of around Tk 70 million within the next six months," Giasuddin Selim, film director of Monpura said.
"The distributors who earlier denied to screen the film in their halls are now interested on the movie, we are planning to allow them to screen it," Mr Selim added.
The film, a production of Machrangha, has been made at a cost of nearly Tk 7.0 million, the production house claimed.
The film of 144 minutes duration is now being screened at 46 cinema halls across the country.
Selim said the movie is being viewed by at least 50,000 viewers in and around the Dhaka city each day.
Monpura, a simple love story of rural background, was shot at Kushtia, Bogra and Pubail in Gazipur. The shooting of the film was started in middle of 2007.
Mr Selim said: "We took only 6 prints at first from Prasad Laboratory in Chennai in India, and then we had to take 40 prints from FDC after huge demand by the local cinema halls."
Officials at the Cineplex in the city told the FE: "We are selling the tickets in advance and it is difficult to see the movie without taking advance tickets."
Cinecomplex, has been showing the film since its release in February and it will continue screening until May. It is showing at two halls out of its three halls.
Uttam Akash, director of country's leading film producing house Maa Kathachitra, told the FE: "The film has become popular mainly because of its songs."
"It is true that the response is beyond our expectation. If the movie can reach at least 400 halls out of around 700 halls in the country, it must be considered a record in the film history".
Zahidur Rahim Anjan, president of Bangladesh Short Film Forum said the making of the film is nice and viewers will return to halls if quality film is made."
Mazharul Islam, a renowned radio announcer, said: "I have watched the movie and it's a good film."
However, Mr Selim said the spectators have been watching the movie mainly because of its originality adding that most of the movies are either copies or replica of other foreign and Indian movies."
Mr Selim, has written the script and screenplay of Monpura besides directing it.
He said: "We want to stop piracy in the film industry to nurse the quality cinemas."
Industry people said a number of talented young film makers entered into the film industry after January changeover as the vulgarity in the film was stopped during the caretaker regime.
