A great loss to the nation
Md. Towhid Ur Rahman | Friday, 6 March 2009
First of all this scribe would like to pay homage to the departed souls of the army officers who were killed in an unforeseen occurrence at the BDR Headquarters on the 25th February. From the very beginning of the current year, we, the common people, were much optimistic about the newly elected government.
The government took charge with great expectations. But we found all dreams nipped in the bud. Now we are the great losers. Burdened with poverty and corruption, we had but little to lose as a nation. But we had a pride. It was about the responsible, well-equipped and brave army that thinks nothing of life for the protection and sovereignty of the nation.
This is not only a matter of sadness but also shame that we cannot protect them. This has become evident as they are killed by the BDR jawans-a supplementary paramilitary force under the Bangladesh Army. Most of the rebel BDR jawans have fled. Some have been arrested, while the hunt for the rest is going on. That is remarkable, but what about the outsiders? We have found some equipment which are not usually used by the BDR! That is a proof of the presence of outsiders within the headquarters. We cannot overlook the possible role of foreign commandos, who, dressed in BDR uniforms, got into the headquarters during the turmoil and killed so many army officers. Such suspicion, however, is not quite without basis. Otherwise, how is it possible that one is killing one's brother in such a way! Whatever has happened, we need to overcome it as soon as possible. That is because we cannot ignore the possibility of further attack. The rebels, under any circumstances, should have to be punished. But at the same time we should not be forgetful of the fact that BDR is the force that ensures border security. The BDR jawans should be taken back to their previous position through prompt arrangements.
The Prime Minister should also talk with the army, the police, the ansar and the VDP forces to look into their genuine demands. Moreover, the security forces should investigate the cases relating to BDR mutiny exhaustively. Undoubtedly, we are now a great loser. To repair the damage done to the army including the BDR is a matter of time. This writer would like to request all to be helpful so that the armed forces might rebuild itself soon.
