'A job for every family'

Monday, 7 September 2009

THE ruling Awami League had made pre-election commitment to provide jobs to one lakh (0.1 million) unemployed people. Its manifesto promised to provide jobs to at least one unemployed person of each family. What is the development now about such commitments and pledges?
The government, we suggest, should take a separate employment project for all the rickshaw pullers to free the city of Dhaka from rickshaws. The pullers would need alternative employment. The city would need more buses for smooth commuting. Efficient bus service would discourage the use of private cars. It can dramatically improve the city traffic.
Moreover, the government should decentralise the offices to discourage so many people rushing to the capital city to get even petty things done.
