The deceased, Abu Taher, had several cases against him including that of murder, police claim. However, Taher's niece, 'Popy', alleged that her uncle, accused in a narcotic case, had been arrested from a Jhumjhumpur tea-stall on Thursday night. Kotwali police Inspector Rafiqul Islam claimed a gunfight had broken out when miscreants opened fire and hurled bombs at the police when they raided the city's Hamidpur area on Friday morning. Taher, shot in his right knee, was arrested after the skirmish.
Inspector Islam said constables Ariful Islam and Shamim Hossain were also injured. A local firearm and two kilogrammes of cannabis were recovered from the scene, he said. Jessore Sadar Hospital's doctor Mriza Aktaruzzaman said Taher died of excessive bleeding two hours after being brought there, according to bdnews24.com.
