A new cleanliness

Tuesday, 25 December 2007

EVERY year after Qurbani, the entire city used to stink. Sometimes, the rains would come down and help to clean the city. However, one doesn't expect the skies to open up at this time of the year.
I can only speak for our area, Indira Road and adjacent Tallabagh and Rajabazar, and I noticed that people this time had taken care to clean up the place after Qurbani.
Sure there were blood spatters on some places but people had sprayed water and sprinkled bleaching powder.
Though there is a slight whiff in the air, the smell of bleaching powder is stronger. And the places, the lanes, are comparatively cleaner.
This was a big surprise for me as I was ready for an attack on my olfactory nerves. That did not happen.
I think people are becoming aware of health issues and acquired a new responsibility: that of keeping their areas clean.
