A noble example by some cricketers

Monday, 27 October 2008

A number of our cricketers who are otherwise well-known for their abilities and achievements, found themselves at the receiving point of national wrath and indignation recently for what was construed as their mercenary actions from joining the Indian Cricket League (ICL) for money, foregoing their duty to the national team. But in this situation some of our youngsters have made us proud of them recently through shining manifestation of their patriotism when patriotism seems to be in short supply in different sectors of the country.
Reportedly, offers came to a number of good performers of our cricketing squad against the currently touring New Zealand, to quit the national team and join ICL. Two of them, reportedly, were offered large sums of money for the purpose. But the offers were reported to be rejected by them which go to show their commitment to national honour and national ambition.
There has been many sides to hope -- as well as frustrations -- about the performance of our national cricketing side against the touring New Zealanders. But the rejection of temptation by some of our cricketers have been properly noticed although their gesture must not be lost on countrymen. It goes to show that there are still Bangladeshis--notwithstanding the pervasive sense of hopelessness about the general character of most of them-- who are pulsated by that great feeling of patriotism in their hearts.
Patriotism is a great source of strength for any nation. Without it and sacrifices for it, no nation could become great or retain the greatness. In this context, the example set by some of our cricketers deserves nationwide appreciation to inspire many others to the same path for our overall national upliftment in different spheres.
