A political storm gathering again?

Thursday, 7 January 2010

POLITICS, the way it is moving, could prompt the opposition to take to the streets before long, and it could be a hot winter in Bangladesh!
The opposition's stance of staying out of parliament seems to have hardened. Initially it had taken a softer stance asking for more seats in the front row. But now it has a longer list of demands for returning to parliament.
Due to the government's indifference the opposition is likely to be unyielding on its demands. Street agitations could, perhaps, be the upshot. The question is, how far, or whether at all a fresh spell of agitations would be good for the country? The answer should be obvious. Elections cost a lot of money. The next election is four years away. The last election, which drew no major objections, should produce a period of political stability.
Post-election political stability, expected by many for the economy to get the due dose of investment, could be soured in the coming days unless the issues are handled well by the government as well as the opposition.
