SIRAJGANJ, Nov 6: Fish cultivation on 260 bighas of water body of Soydabad village in Sirajganj Sadar upazila may change the lot of at least 2000 people of 350 families. These people are seeing a ray of hope from yesterday when the large water body was given on lease to them.
Join forces with the assistance of district administration took necessary steps to give them the lease the water body for their rehabilitation so that they may earn a good livelihood.
Brigadier General Nasimul Gani, Brigade Commander of 98 compose brigade in a simple function yesterday released fish fries in the large water body. Ibrahim Khalil, Deputy Commissioner of Sirajganj, Lieutenant Col. Sajjad Hossain, Major Jahangir, Major Ferdous were also present as special guest.
According to sources, during the construction of Jamuna Bridge, the bridge authorities got the land in the area acquired. At one stage, the lands turned into a large water body due to dredging. Most of the landowners have become landless and distressed. They had been leading days in misery and hardship. The affected land owners demanded the government to do something for them through the local administration.
In 1006, the then Jamuna bridge authorities had given lease of the water body to an NGO for fish cultivation. But the lot of the real land owners became worse.
Observing the misery of the landless poor people in the area, army personnel who are now serving with responsibility in Sirajganj took the initiative to find out the real owners of the lands and brought them together.
Later, they formed an organisation named "Soydabad Fish Cultivator's Association" with 350 members who were owners of the lands. Joint forces released the water body from the NGO and gave it on lease to the newly created association.
