A rare example of vegetable farming

SIRAJGANJ, Mar 13: A local union parishad chairman, namely Graho has set a rare example of vegetable farming in the district by cultivating vegetables on the banks of ponds.
He is now a source of inspiration for many in the region. He is earning about Tk 10,000 every day, sources said
Graho produces different kinds of vegetables and supply those regularly to different kitchen markets in the capital Dhaka and other districts.
Meanwhile, he has earned Tk 0.6 million as profit from the farm and is expecting to earn Tk 0.2 million more within the next two or three months.
Witnessing the example, many farmers in the district have become interested to set up vegetables farms on their barren land.
Graho, Chairman of Naogaon union parishad in Tarash upazila, has set up a vegetable farm on the banks of nine ponds, which were dug on about 24 bighas of lands in front of his resident at Kalupara village to cultivate fish.
It may be mentioned here that generally most of the banks of ponds in the area remain unused for years. But, Graho used them to cultivate vegetable.
Primarily, he started to cultivate gourd popularly known 'jatlau', bean, chilli and papaya in his farm with a simple investment of Tk 20,000, he said.
On an average, 300 gourds and about two maunds of gourd leaves and five mounds of bean are being collected from the farm everyday during the current season and these are being sold at about Tk. 7000 per day.
Besides, he is earning about Tk 3000 more by selling green chilli, papaya and tomato each day.
A total of 25 people toil at his vegetable farm and he and his wife supervise the work.
