A view on subsidising the garment sector
Saturday, 12 September 2009
A few days ago, Bangladesh Garme-nts Manufacturers & Exporters Association (BGMEA) sought government funds for paying the salary and festival allowance to the RMG workers. Isn't it too ridiculous? It seems that soon they will say that the entrepreneurs would take home the profit while it would be the government's responsibility to bear the expenses. The usually profitable garment export sector loves to play the cat-and-mouse game with the workers, whenever they ask for due wages and other benefits. Seldom do we blame the owners for not paying the wages regularly to the exploited workers. But the workers are baton-charged for protecting wrongs done by the owners.
They only love to want the profit but not to pay enough to the workers. Greed often makes some industry owners inhuman.
It is time we pay some attention to reduce social inequality and exploitation.
