Abahani beats Mohammedan, keep title hope alive

Abahani Limited kept their title hope alive in the Green Delta Insurance Premier Division Hockey League beating archrival Mohammedan SC by 6-5 goals in a keenly contested match at the Maulana Bhasani National Hockey Stadium Tuesday, reports UNB.
With this, Abahani Limited improved their position securing 31 points, two points behind league leaders Usha KC (33), while Mohammedan SC remained at 26 points, all playing 12 matches.
Abahani Limited will play their last match against Usha KC on Friday (June 6) to decide the league title, while Mohammedan SC meets Sonali Bank on Thursday.
In the day's match, Mamunur Rahman Choyon scored three goals, Moududur Rahman Shuvo struck twice and Pakistani recruit Mohammad Mudasser netted one goal for Abahani which led the 1st half 4-1. Mohammad Sabbir and Golam Mostafa Manik scored two goals each and Isa Mia netted one for Mohammedan SC.
Shuvo put Abahani Limited ahead in the very 2nd minute of the match with a field goal off a Kuti pass (1-0), while Isa Mia restored parity for Mohammedan SC from a penalty corner the very next minute (1-1).
Choyon scored two quick goals for Abahani within six minutes from penalty corners -- the 1st in the 14th minute and the 2nd in the 19th minute (3-1), while Mudasser further widened the margin with a gentle push capitalizing on a Kuti short pass (4-1).
After the lemon break, Sabbir pulled one back for Mohammedan SC from penalty stroke (4-2).
Shuvo scored the 5th goal for Abahani in the 53rd minute with a hit after dodging past an opponent defender and then custodian Mehrab Hossain Kiron off a Mudasser cross (5-2). Manik scored for Mohammedan SC in the 65th minute with a placing shot off Irfanul Haq long pass (5-3).
Choyon scored his 3rd goal, the 6th for Abahani, from a penalty corner in the 67th minute (6-3).
Sabbir scored his 2nd goal, the 4th for Mohammedan SC, in the 69th minute from a penalty stroke (6-4), while Manik scored the 5th goal for Mohammedan SC off a Talib cross in the dying moment of the match (6-5).
Both the teams played attacking hockey and missed several scoring chances. Abahani Limited clearly dominated in the 1st half while Mohammedan SC in the 2nd half.
Tomorrow's (Thursday's) match: Mohammedan SC vs Sonali Bank (4 pm).
