Abahani clinches Federation Cup title

A superb hattrick by Ghanaian striker Awudu Ibrahim guided Abahani Limited to clinch the title of the GrameenPhone Federation Cup Football beating new comer Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi club by 5-3 goals in the final at the Bir Shreshtha Shaheed Seploy Mohammad Mostafa Kamal Stadium at Kamalapur in the city Saturday, reports UNB.
The keenly contested match was decided in the extra-time after the stipulated period ended 3-3 draw.
Finance Minister AMA Muhith was the chief guest on the final and distributed the prizes among the winners. State Minister for Youth and Sports Ahad Ali Sarkar and Bangladesh Football Federation president Kazi Salahuddin were present as special guests.
In the stipulated time, Ghanaian striker Awudu Ibrahim struck twice and Twun Frank scored another one goal for Abahani Limited while Mohammad Enamul Haque struck twice and Mamunul Islam netted for Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club.
In the extra time, Yusif Aminu and and Awudu Ibrahim scored one goal each for Abahani.
The match was locked 1-1 during the first half.
Enamul put new comer Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club ahead in the 31st minnute with a left-footer from inside the D-box after taking a cross from Zahid (1-0).
But, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi club got a little time to enjoy their lead as African strker Awudu Ibrahim restored the parity for Abahani Limited in the 32nd minute. He sent the ball into the open net with an angular shot from inside the danger zone off a long pass from Frank at midfield (1-1).
After resumption, Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club again took lead as country's famed striker Enamul scored his second goal in the 49th minute. Taking a left wing cross from Meshu, Enamul superbly sent the ball home with a header giving no chance to Abahani custodian Zia (2-1).
Abahani again backed into match neutralizing the team's margin in the 50th minute from a penalty. Referee Azad Rahman awarded the spot kick in favor of Abahani as Abahani Jitu's cross touched the hand of Sheikh Jamal defender Zahid Hossain in the danger zone. Foreign recruit Twun Frank made no mistake to convert the spot kick (2-2).
Striker Ibrahim put Abahani Limited ahead scoring his second goal in the 79th minute with a right-footer from inside the D-box after dodging past some Sheikh Jamal defenders in the goal-mouth melee (3-2).
Mamunul Islam Mamun brought Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the match to level the margin 86th minute. He placed the ball home from the vantage position off a pass from Enamul following a combined attack(3-3) .
Aminu scored the 4th goal for Abahani Limited in the 111th minute with a placing shot from inside the danger zone as Linkon's attempt came to his way after hitting an opponent defender's body (4-3).
Ibrahim sealed the fate of the match for Abahani Limited scoring his hattrick goal in the 121st minute with a shot from inside the danger zone after capitalizing on a Shuvra's free kick (5-3).
Both the teams played attacking football during the entire proceedings that gave a huge entertainment to the crowds in the packed stadium under the flood light.
The three times league champion Abahani Limited had to wait to clinch the title prolong ten years. Their title hope dashed several times despite going closer to the final for the last three years. The eight times Federation cup holder won the last tournament title in 2000.
Rezaul Karim of Sheikh Jamal got marching order during the extratime following his double yellow cards.
