Abahani confirm premier league crown

Abahani Limited confirmed the Dhaka Metropolis Premier Division Cricket title for the third time in a row with two matches to spare beating Partex SC by 76 runs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium at Mirpur in Dhaka Tuesday, reports UNB.
In the day's other match, Surjo Tarun Club beat Biman Bangladesh Airlines by 11 runs at the BKSP ground in Savar.
After the day's third round super league matches, the popular Dhanmondi outfit Abahani Limited assured the league crown securing 26 points while Surjo Tarun Club follow them with 22 points, both playing 14 matches.
In the remaining two super league matches, Abahani Limited will play Biman Bangladesh Airlines (Apr 3) and their nearest rivals Surjo Tarun Club (Apr 5) while Surjo Tarun Club will face Gazi Tanks Cricketers (Apr 3), apart from their encounter with Abahani.
Abahani's league crown will not be affected even in case of defeat in the two remaining matches as they are in good position in head to head and net run rate.
Surjo Tarun have a very tough task to stay in the race as they have to win both of their league matches with extraordinary run rate and also have to wait for Abahani's defeat in both the matches.
In the first phase, Abahani Ltd beat Surjo Tarun by six wickets.
In the day's 41-over-a-side match due to wet outfield at SBNS, Abahani batted first after winning the toss to score 238 runs for 6 wickets in 41 overs with Indian cricketer Reshmi Ranjan Parida making not out 89 off 91 balls that featured seven fours and a six.
National vice-captain-cum-Abahani skipper Mashrafe Bin Mortaza, who is scheduled to leave here for India in a couple of days to play in the IPL, played a key role for Abahani's victory with his all round performance today.
After the dismissal of four top batsmen-national opener Tamim Iqbal (23), opener Imran Ahmed (18), Shahagir Hossain (1) and Nadif Chowdhury (8) -- for 61 runs in 13.4 overs, Reshmi Ranjan made two good partnership to carry the team total to a respectable position.
Reshmi Ranjan made 70 runs in the 5th wicket stand with Arafat Sunny and another 107 runs in the 6th wicket stand with skipper Mashrafe.
Mashrafe, who played a hurricane innings of 62 runs off 33 balls with four fours and four sixes in addition to taking two wickets for 43 runs, was adjudged man of the match.
Besides, middle order Arafat Sunny (27) was the other notable contributor for Abahani.
In reply, Partex SC were all out for 162 in 33.2 overs with opener Fahat-ul Haq making team highest 63 runs off 80 balls that included six boundaries.
Ariful Haq (36), Mehrab Hossain (17) and national wicket keeper Mushfiqur Rahim (10) were the other main scorers for Partex SC.
Arafat Sunny caused the major damage to Partex innings grabbing four wickets for 20 runs in 5.2 overs while Talha Jubair claimed two wickets for 27 runs, in addition to Mashrafe's two wickets.
Sent in to bat first in curtailed 49 over match at BKSP, Bangladesh Biman scored 198 for 9 in 49 overs with opener Nazmus Sadat making half century off 62 balls with two fours and a six.
Zahid Niaz (36), Javed Omar (35), Jahurul Islam (17), skipper Sanuar Hossain (16) and pacer Alamgir Kabir (16) were the other main scorers for national flag carrier Biman.
Sabbir claimed five wickets for 25 runs in nine overs and was adjudged man of the match, while Saqlain Sajib took two for 45 runs.
In reply, Surjo Tarun Club scored 174 runs for 6 in 42.3 overs when the match was stopped due to bad light and were adjudged the winners under D/L method.
For Surjo Tarun Club, former national vice captain Rajin Saleh (39), Junaed Siddique (38), Anisur Rahman (38), Hannan Sarkar (22), Sabbir Hossain (not out 15), Saeed Anwar (14) were the major contributors. Nazmus Samad captured two wickets for 25 runs.
The day's other match between Dhaka Mohammedan SC and Gazi Tanks Crickets could not be held at Narayanganj Osmani Stadium due to unplayable ground. The match will be held today (Wednesday) at Sher-e-Bangla Stadium at Mirpur.
