Abahani end in agony

League champions Abahani Limited completed their Metropolis Premier Division Cricket League engagements with a frustrating four-wicket loss to league runners-up Surjo Tarun Club in the last league match at the BKSP ground in Savar Sunday, reports UNB.
In the day's other two matches, Mohammedan SC beat Biman Bangladesh Airlines by six wickets at the Narayanganj Osmani Stadium in Fatullah while Gazi Tanks Cricketers defeated Partex SC by 30 runs at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur.
On completion of the league encounters, Abahani Limited clinched the premier cricket league crown for the third time in a row securing 28 points while Surjo Tarun Club finished runners-up with 24 points, playing 16 matches each.
Dhaka Mohammedan SC became third securing 19 points, Biman Bangladesh Airlines and Gazi Tanks Cricketers finished joint 4th with 18 points, while Partex SC finished 5th and last with 14 points losing all the five super league matches.
At the BKSP ground in Savar, Abahani Limited, who batted first after winning the toss in a delayed start 39-over-a-side match because of overnight rain, were bundled out cheaply for 126 in 36.3 overs.
After initial batting collapse losing four wickets for just 9 runs in 6.5 overs, top order Indian batsman Reshmi Ranjan Paridha took the entire responsibility of the team on his shoulder and single handedly carried the total to 100 plus runs.
Reshmi Ranjan, who performed consistently for Abahani in the super league, contributed not out 76 runs off 82 balls with five fours and a six. Nadif Chowdhury was the only other Abahani batsman who reached double figure with a patient 62-ball 22 runs.
Pacer Shafiul Islam caused the major damage to the Abahani innings capturing the top four wickets for 14 runs in seven overs with a maiden and was adjudged man of the match.
In reply, league runners-up Surjo Tarun Club reached their target scoring 130 runs for 6 wickets in 36.3 overs with former national vice captain Rajin Saleh making not out 35 off 62 balls that included two fours and a six.
At the NOS, Biman Bangladesh Airlines batted first after winning the toss and scored 260 for 6 in 50 overs with Mushfiqur Rahman making 79 and Zahid Niaz 50 runs.
Suhrawardy Shuvo and Tareq Aziz Khan claimed two wickets each conceding 35 and 62 runs respectively.
In reply, Dhaka Mohammedan SC easily reached their target of 261 runs in 45 overs for the loss of four wickets.
One down Shamsur Rahman hammered a polished 98 runs off 97 balls with seven fours and three sixes to be adjudged man of the match. Marshal Ayub scored 51 runs off 62 balls with three fours and a six while Foysal Hossain made a 33-ball 45 runs with eight boundaries.
Favoured by coin at Mirpur Stadium, Gazi Tanks Cricketers opened the innings first to score 265 for 5 in 50 overs.
National opener Imrul Kayes made a century hitting 102 runs off 126 balls with eleven fours and two sixes to be adjudged man of the match while two down Naeem Islam scored 58 runs off 57 balls with four fours.
In reply, Partex SC were all out for 235 runs in 48.3 overs with national wicket-keeper cum batsman Mushfiqur Rahim making 46, Fahad ul Haq 40 and Rezaul Haque 38 runs.
Saju Dutta, Naeem Islam, Mohammad Ashrfaul and Ribel Hossain took two wickets each.
