Abahani-Sheikh Jamal final showdown today
Saturday, 30 October 2010
Abahani Limited takes on newcomers Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the final of the GrameenPhone Federation Cup Football today (Saturday) with both teams hopeful about clinching the title, reports UNB.
The match will kick off at 5 pm at the Bir Shreshtha Shaheed Sepoy Mohammad Mostafa Kamal Stadium at Kamalapur in the city.
"There is no scope to underestimate Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club… We'll take to the field to win the tomorrow's (Saturday) match," said Abahani team manager Satyajit Das Rupu after the team's practice session this (Friday) afternoon.
Abahani's Iranian coach Ali Akbar, who seemed a little worried about his boys' silly mistakes in the semis against Brothers Union, said they would not bow their head easily to a new team like Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club in the final.
He said: "Our results in the previous matches could have been better if the boys did not make the mistakes."
Coach Ali Akbar hoped that his boys would be able to give their best in the final and would take to the field to win.
Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club's Serbian coach Zoran Kraljevic was found relaxed during the practice session with his boys today.
He showed some tactics to the booters during the practice session and how to implement those in the final.
"I'm hopeful to get a win… if our booters are able to maintain their consistency as in the previous matches it will be easier for them to win the final," coach Kraljevic said.
Sheikh Jamal Dhanmondi Club team manager Anwarul Karim Helal said they are hopeful about clinching the title although it would not be easy against such a balanced team like Abahani.
Either Shakil or Komol will replace injured Sheikh Jamal medio Shahed in the final. Shahed received the injury during a final round match against Rahmatganj MFS.
Sheikh Jamal team management, however, intends to keep Touhidul Islam Sabuj, who scored the match-winner as a substitute in the semifinal against Muktijoddha Sangsad KC, for the entire 90 minutes in the final.
Meanwhile, the three-time league champions Abahani Limited, which clinched the Federation Cup title seven times, reached the final on 14 occasions. They last won the Federation Cup title in 2000.
Final round result:
Abahani Limited 2-0 Rahmatganj MFS
Abahani Limited 1-1 Sheikh Russell
Abahani Limited 1 - 1 Sheikh Jamal
Sheikh Jamal 0-0 Sheikh Russell
Sheikh Jamal 2-2 Rahmatganj MFS
Semi-final
Abahani Limited 1-0 Brothers Union
Sheikh Jamal 1-0 Muktijoddha SKC
