Bangladesh needs short and long term plans to improve the country's nagging power situation, said the regional chief of ABB Limited.

'We think there is a need for short and long-term plans,' Biplab Majumder, managing director and country manager of ABB Limited, India, told the FE.

ABB Limited, a Swiss-based leader in power and automation technologies, runs its operation in around 100 countries employing more than 110,000 workforce to give its global and local customers the support they need to develop and conduct their business successfully.

The company also works with its customers to engineer and install facilities and plants to enhance efficiency and productivity and provide them with comprehensive market and product support services as well as creative financing and risk management.

Mr Majumder, also In-charge of South Asian countries, said Bangladesh can connect its national power grid with those of neighbouring countries as a short term measure to reduce the electricity crisis in the country.

The ABB regional chief, during his recent Dhaka visit, said Bangladesh can also utilise its coal stock in the country's northern region for power generation.

When asked, he said ABB can extend its all possible cooperation to any development work in Bangladesh's power sector.

He also said electrical products are the key components to distribute electricity.

'We offer all the services needed to ensure products' performance and extend their lifespan.'

Answering a question, he said the growth of Bangladesh's economy might face a setback unless there is an arrangement to meet the future power demand of the country.

Mr Majumder observed ABB is a leading supplier of industrial robots - also providing robot software, peripheral equipment, modular manufacturing cells and service for tasks such as welding, handling, assembly, painting and finishing, picking, packing, palletising and machine tending.

He added the key areas of markets of ABB include automotive, plastics, metal fabrication, electronics, machine tools, pharmaceutical and food and beverage industries. ABB has installed more than 160,000 robots worldwide.

Replying to a question, he said: 'Sustainability is integral to all aspects of our business. We strive to balance economic, environmental and social objectives and integrate them into our daily business decisions.'

ABB Limited is listed on the stock exchanges in Zurich (SWX), Stockholm and New York.
