RAJSHAHI, June 21: Prices of construction materials have gone up abnormally in the recent days in the district affecting construction works.
According to sources, last year a truck of first class bricks was sold at Tk 5,000 but this year a truck full of the same quality bricks is being sold at Tk. 7,000.
The increase in the prices of bricks has been attributed to the strong measures taken by the district administration against the owners of the brick fields for use of firewood in brickfields instead of coal.
The procurement cost of bricks has gone up due to hike in the price of the raw materials. The prices of coal, clay and sand used to prepare bricks have also increased.
A kilogramme of MS 9 mm rod is being sold at Tk 45. Besides, a bag of 'elephant brand' cement is sold at Tk 350. A truck weighing 300 cft of sand is being sold at Tk 2,500, while it was sold at Tk 2,000 earlier.
The prices of other necessary construction materials like bamboo have also gone up.
A standard-sized bamboo is being sold at Tk. 160.
On the other hand, wages of construction workers have also increased. Tk 110 to Tk 150 is paid for construction-related works per day per head.
