Absence of anti adulteration drive

CHITTAGONG, July 24: Organised gangs have activated their drives for manufacturing adulterated items of goods in Chaktai-Khatungonj area since anti-adulteration drives have been suspended in the city.
Adulterated items of goods have already flooded the markets in the port city and other parts of the district. Recently, law enforcers have recovered 70 sacks of 'dhonia' and powder of pepper.
Sources said Chaktai-Khatungonj-based different syndicates have been involved in manufacturing adulterated goods for long. Most of the syndicate members have become millionaires from sheer petty employees of different trading houses.
The sources said there are two types of traders indulging in adulteration business. One type is permanent while the other is seasonal.
The police arrested four persons recently from their factories of manufacturing adulterated items at Khatunganj. According to their confessional statements, adulterated powders of pepper and spices are manufactured in 10 to 20 factories in Chaktai-Khatungonj area.
These factories remain closed in daytime but they remain open throughout the night for producing spurious items.
