Abuse of power
Thursday, 26 March 2009
An MP is all powerful. They always remain surrounded by so many people. An MP can do whether he or she wants, particularly if he or she belongs to the ruling party. An MP can even beat a journalist. Thus, a powerful Member of Parliament from Narayanganj beat a photo journalist of a local newspaper. The journalist had committed no offence.
After the new government look the responsibility, all expected that no excesses would be done by the 'powerful'. But our expectation is yet to come true.
During the upazila election, we have seen excesses committed against election commission officials. Nobody can talk against the wrongs the powerful commit.
The March 15 incident in which a journalist was beaten in Narayanganj is totally unacceptable.
Earlier, in Dhaka University (DU) journalists were attacked. The NTV video editor was killed on his way home.
The government should take steps against all such incidents.
