FE Special
SUMON starts his class eight in a high school in a rural area. He knows it very well that in the first one or two months, classes will be held very loosely--one class on some days, two or three classes on some days. He has experienced this when he was in class six and seven. So he does not become serious during the first two months. His first two months prove to be a wastage .
Like Sumon, there are hundreds of thousands of students who waste their valuable time for the first few months of their academic life every year. One of the ways to stop such wastage is introduction and strict implementation of academic calendar-that is plan about the classes and the exams. Though there has been introduction of such planning in recent time, its implementation need to be taken care of for maintaining a standard of education.
The rural schools are lagging behind in implementing academic calendar. If the rural schools and colleges were serious with regard to such a means of study planning, many of their students could do much better in studies and those students could easily compete with the urban students. In that way, a more 'equality' in education could be achieved.
The first benefit the introduction and implementation of academic calendar offers is the utilisation of the first few months. Students would be serious from the beginning of the academic year and they would be inspired to study regularly for the whole year.
While introducing academic calendar, teachers can arrange more tests and exams for the students. This would keep the students under pressure for studies and they could prepare themselves for the final exam much better. Also, students would have little time for wasting in playing video games, chat over Internet, talking on the cell phone, drug addiction, addas and so on.
If there is strict implementation of academic calendar, students can plan the whole year in accordance with it. They will know when the school declares vacation, they would be able to plan their travel or activities accordingly.
The introduction and strict implementation of academic calendar is not that difficult a task for the teachers, but it will give them a lot in return.
