Academic institution stressed for quake awareness

Speakers at a seminar in the capital Tuesday stressed the importance of creating awareness to minimise loss of lives and property in the event of an earth quake. Effective execution of the building code can also ensure safety of inhabitants at the time of catastrophic tremors, they said. If necessary, an institution can be set up to impart training on ways to face disasters.
Three divisional cities-Dhaka, Chittagong and Sylhet-are now in serious risks of earthquake which may cause a huge loss of lives and resources at any time, the speakers said at a seminar on 'earthquake mass awareness and its preparedness' at TSC auditorium of Dhaka University (DU) Tuesday.
Green Belt Trust organised the seminar in cooperation with DU Geology Department and Centre for Disaster and Vulnerability Studies.
"At least 70 thousand people will die and 72 thousand houses of the capital will be affected if a 6.6 or 7-magnitude quake takes place," DU Geology Department teacher ASM Maksud Kamal said in his keynote paper, making a clarion call to all to remain alert of the disaster.
DU Vice-Chancellor Prof AAMS Arefin Siddiue, Bangladesh Fire Service and Civil Defence Director General Brig Gen Abu Nayeem Md Shahidullah, Prof of Civil Engineering Department of BUET Shariful Islam and Green Belt Director General Jashim Khatabi spoke at the seminar.
