ACC approves CS against 32

FE Report | Wednesday, 1 October 2014

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has approved a charge-sheet (CS) against 32 people, including Bangladesh Railways (BR) officials, in a corruption case over railway recruitment graft.
However, ACC has given a clean chit to former BR Eastern Zone general manager Yusuf Ali Mridha. He has got clean chit in five corruption cases, including this one.
The case was filed with Kotwali Police Station in Chittagong on September 13, 2012.
According to the charge-sheet, Yusuf Ali Mridha only performed his daily routine work, as he approved the documents.  No evidence was available against him during investigation.
ACC has not found any involvement of former Railways Minister Suranjit Sengupta with the appointment irregularities.
Mridha was suspended on April 15, 2012, a week after he was caught with Tk 7 million inside the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) Headquarters at Pilkhana in the capital. The money was allegedly collected from railway job-seekers.
The then minister Suranjit Sengupta had to resign over the cash haul, following allegations that the money was being taken to his Jhigatola residence. Suranjit has all along denied the claim.
The cash haul, which came to be known as the Railway-Gate Scandal, later exposed widespread irregularities in recruitment in different tiers of BR.
Meanwhile, ACC on Tuesday filed a case against five people, including two former Sonali Bank officials, for allegedly swindling Tk 61 million from the state-owned Sonali Bank.
ACC deputy director Mir Joynul Abedin Shibly filed the case with Motijheel Police Station under the Prevention of Corruption Act 1947.
The accused of the case are Sonali Bank's former DGM (foreign trade corporate branch) Baki Billah and former AGM (foreign trade corporate branch) Abdul Hai, managing director of Rahan Garments Limited Sarwar M Kamal, and its directors Saidur Islam Khan and Abu Sayed Shahriar Ahmed.
According to the first information report (FIR), they swindled the money during October 2000 to October 2001.
