ACC blames TIB for launching propaganda against it

FE Report | Thursday, 29 May 2014

A top official of the Anti-corruption Commission (ACC) blamed the Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB) Wednesday for intentionally spreading propaganda against the anti-graft body.
He also said the Commission has enough documents on TIB and would make those public in time.
"The TIB publishes so-called reports sitting in the air-conditioned room taking money from abroad. What kind of transparency they maintain? Their face would be unmasked on time," said the ACC Commissioner M Sahabuddin Chuppu at a programme at the Shilpakala Academy in the city.
The ACC organised the prize distribution ceremony for some city corporations, district, and upazila level committees of the Commission.
ACC Chairman Md Badiuzzaman, its Commissioner Dr Nasiruddin Ahmed, head of news of Channel i Shaikh Siraj, ACC director general Dr Md Shamsul Arefin addressed the programme, among others, with the Commission Secretary Md Foyzur Rahman in the chair.
The ACC Commissioner also said that the TIB is playing its role like a supervisory body of the Commission rather than making any constructive criticism.
"Now-a-days TIB is acting like watchdog of the ACC. It is criticising every work of the Commission instead of constructive criticism," he alleged.
"Did they look to our work while we send big guns to jail for corruption and made people free from vicious cycle of MLM companies?," the ACC Commissioner asked.
Mr Chuppu said, "Why don't you praise our good works? Rather than blaming us of failure, even when we look into the corruption of ruling party."
The TIB revealed a report titled 'National Integrity System Assessment: Bangladesh' recently which said that the ACC has no adequate institutional capacity to pursue corruption cases and files and withdraws graft cases on political considerations. The report also said that the ability of the anti-graft body to act independently is questionable.
Dubbing the ACC as a toothless tiger, the TIB study said the Commission is beset with structural and institutional weaknesses and work under political pressures which, in essence, have affected its overall performance and effectiveness.
