CHITTAGONG, Feb 07: A tax officer of the Chittagong City Corporation (CCC) was detained on Tuesday for his alleged corruption.
Officials at the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) in Chittagong said the officer, Ali Akbar, was detained while taking bribe amounting to Tk 20,000 from one Jamal Uddin of Rupali Residential Area under Chandgaon police station in the port city for 're-scheduling his holding tax'.
Jamal Uddin said Ali Akbar claimed Tk 40,000 as bribe for changing his holding tax, upon which he informed the ACC officials at Agrabad in the city.
A team of ACC officials headed by deputy director Mosharraf Hossain in a tip-off caught Ali Akbar red-handed with cooperation from the Chandgaon police while the latter was receiving the amount, the DD of ACC said.
Later, the accused was handed over to the Chandgaon police upon which the law-enforcers filed a case against Ali Akbar.
The accused, however, told the reporters that the ACC officials did not get any money from him. He had only Tk 324 with him when the ACC officials cordoned him in the office.
"I came to the office from Agrabad and they later cordoned me off and detained although they could not recover any sort of bribe from me," he said.
