ACC files cases against AL MP, 2 ex-state ministers

FE Report | Friday, 22 August 2014

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Thursday filed three separate cases against an incumbent lawmaker and two former state ministers of the Awami League-led grand alliance government for amassing wealth illegally and concealing information on assets in their statements submitted to the Commission.
The cases have been filed against Awami League's (AL) lawmaker from Cox's Bazar-4 constituency Abdur Rahman Bodi and former state ministers for water resources Mahbubur Rahman and state minister for housing and public works Abdul Mannan Khan.
ACC deputy directors Mohammad Abdus Subhan, Md. Nasir Uddin and Md. Khairul Huda filed the first information reports (FIRs) with Ramna Model Police Station under Sections 26(2) and 27(1) of the Anti-corruption Commission Act, 2004.
In the FIR lodged against AL parliamentarian Abdur Rahman Bodi, the ACC alleged that the lawmaker acquired movable and immovable assets worth Tk 10,86,81669 (around Tk 109 million) beyond his known source of income.
It said the accused member of the parliament (MP) also committed punishable crimes under those aforesaid sections of the ACC Act, 2004 by showing additional Tk 1,98,03375 (around Tk 20 million) in the form of selling price of a portion of land at Teknaf in Cox's Bazar, that he bought at only Tk 41,96,625 (nearly Tk 4.20 million)
"He (the MP) sold the land just after 8 months and 8 days of the date of purchase. So, it is clearly proved that he showed the much higher selling price of the land only to give the legality of the wealth he acquired illegally," according to the case statement.
It also mentioned that the value of overall assets shown by the lawmaker in the affidavit just before 9th parliamentary election in 2008 rose to Tk 16,06,96203 (around Tk 167 million) now from Tk 49,79440 (around Tk 5.0 million).
According to the case filed against former state minister for water resources and lawmaker from Patuakhali-6 constituency Mahbubur Rahman, the petitioner alleged that the ex-state minister amassed wealth worth Tk 5,19,50,000 (nearly Tk 52 million) illegally.
The ACC also raised an allegation against Mahbubur Rahman of hiding information on assets worth Tk 1,24,40,000 (around Tk12.50 million) in their statements earlier submitted to the Commission.
The FIR also mentioned that the value of wealth of the lawmaker stood at Tk 6,35,00,512 (over Tk 63.50 million) at the end of 2013, up by Tk 5,84,12,400 (around Tk 58.50 million) from 2008.
In another FIR, an allegation of illegal acquiring of movable and immovable assets worth Tk 75,04,262 (over Tk 7.50 million) was also lodged against former state minister for housing and public works Abdul Mannan Khan on the day.
At the same time, the ACC also accused the ex-minister for the concealment of wealth worth Tk 4,59,597 (around 0.46 million) in his wealth statement earlier submitted to the Commission.
