ACC forms committee to look into Benazir's wealth

FE REPORT | Tuesday, 23 April 2024

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has formed a committee to look into allegations of illegal wealth accumulation against former Inspector General of Police (IGP) Benazir Ahmed.
On Monday, ACC Secretary Khorsheda Yesmeen informed journalists about the development. "A three-member committee has been formed to investigate the allegations of Benazir amassing illegal wealth," she said.
The committee will follow relevant ACC rules to conduct a thorough investigation, the ACC secretary said.
Several media outlets have reported on Benazir's alleged illegal wealth acquisition.
She said the ACC is taking action under its regulations regarding these allegations against the former IGP.
Yesmeen said the ACC approved the investigation into Benazir's wealth during its first meeting on April 18 after the Eid vacation.
Responding to a query about whether the probe is an "eyewash", the secretary said, "It is not true."
"The investigation against Benazir was already underway, and there is documentation to support this," she said.
In a separate development on Monday, a writ petition was filed with the High Court seeking to direct the ACC to investigate corruption allegations against Benazir.
The writ filed by Supreme Court lawyer Salah Uddin Rigan named four respondents, including the ACC chairman and secretary.
Rigan sought the court's direction in light of recent newspaper reports detailing serious corruption allegations against the former IGP.
