ACC grills 9 cops over 165 gold bars embezzlement

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) quizzed nine police officials from different zones on Sunday on charge of embezzling 165 gold bars during an operation in the capital's Banasree neighborhood.
ACC deputy director Jatan Kumar began the interrogation at about 10:00am at the commission. Nine policemen, out of 10, testified on the day, an official told The Financial Express.
On March 13, a gang of smugglers abandoned 235 gold bars inside a car in the capital's Banasree area after being chased by a police team. But Rampura police recorded seizure of only 70 gold bars.
Earlier on Wednesday, Jatan Kumar summoned a total of 19 policemen to testify over the stealing.
Ten policemen - Motijheel Zone assistant commissioner Jewel Rana, Demra Zone AC Mainul Islam, inspectors Abul Khayer Matubbar and Md Rafiqul Islam, assistant sub-inspector Abul Bashar Mia, Naik Md Shakhawat Hossain, and constables AK Azad, Md Abul Hasan, Md Saiful Alam and Nayan Kumar - were asked to appear before ACC on Sunday.
The Commission also interrogated seven police officials over the same allegation on Thursday.
They were - Khilgaon Zone AC Md Iqbal Hossain, sub-inspectors Abdul Mannan, ANS Nuruzzaman, Masud Mia, M Rashedul Islam, and two constables Md Delwar Hossain and Md Rahim.
The commission was also scheduled to interrogate Detective Branch inspector Md Fazlul Haq and sub-inspector AKM Mehedi Hasan. But the two policemen sought time, as they are now in a UN mission, according to the officials.
