ACC grills Sonali Bank, CWASA officials

The Anti Corruption Commission (ACC) quizzed three Sonali Bank officials Monday over allegation of irregularities in Tk 70 billion loans disbursed from its nine branches.
The officials are Senior Executive Officers of the central office of the bank Sukumar Roy and Jasim Uddin Khan and Senior Officer Khandakar Abdul Wakib.
ACC Deputy Director (DD) Mir Zainul Abedin Shebly interrogated them for two hours from 2:00 pm at its office in city's Segunbagicha area.
On October 29, the ACC DD also quizzed six officers of Sonali Bank local office namely foreign exchange department General Manager (GM) MA Baten, Deputy General Manager Hosne Ara Begum, Assistant General Manager Amiruddin, Senior Principal Officer Sakhawat Hossain Khan, Senior Officers Manzurul Islam and Nazmul.
According to ACC, they allegedly embezzled around Tk 70 billion from nine branches including Rupashi Bangla Hotel branch, Agargaon branch, Gulshan branch, local office, Motijheel Foreign Exchange Corporate branch, Bangabandhu Avenue Corporate branch, Chittagong Agrabad Corporate branch, Chittagong Laldighi Corporate branch and Narayanganj Corporate branch of Sonali Bank by opening fake letter of credit (LC) accounts and loan forgery.
Meanwhile, ACC questioned Monday four officials of Chittagong WASA (Water Supply and Sewerage Authority), including its Deputy Secretary Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, in connection with alleged irregularities in recruiting staff and procurement.
Mir M Zainul Abedin Shebly started grilling them at 9:30 am and continued until 3:30 pm at the ACC head office.
Apart from Jahangir Alam Chowdhury, storekeeper AKM Saifuddin Chowdhury, pump driver Moin Uddin and assistant pump driver Tarique Uddin Chowdhury were interrogated on the day.      
Earlier, the ACC launched probe following an allegation that the CWASA deputy secretary and others recruited a number of staff and gave promotion to many officials violating rules for their 'personal gains'.
