ACC launches inquiry against Hasina, family members
FE REPORT | Friday, 27 December 2024
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has initiated an inquiry against former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, her sister Shiekh Rehana and her four other family members over allegations of acquiring six plots in the Purbachal New Town Project through irregularities and corruption.
The four other accused are: Hasina's son Sajeeb Wazed Joy, daughter Saima Wazed Putul, Rehana's son Radwan Mujib Siddiq Bobby, and daughter Azmina Siddiq.
Each of the six was allocated a 10-katha plot in the diplomatic zone of Sector 27 in Purbachal New Town, totaling 60 kathas in the Road 203 area. The allocations were reportedly made using discretionary powers, according to sources from the ACC.
On Thursday, the ACC's headquarters officially decided to launch the inquiry, Md. Akhtar Hossain, director general of ACC, confirmed.
ACC noted that the allegations were prompted by media reports highlighting the irregularities. Considering the gravity of the claims, the ACC decided to proceed with the inquiry.
On December 22, the ACC had also decided to launch an inquiry into the allegations of laundering US$300 million abroad by Shiekh Hasina and her son.
Additionally, a five-member team had earlier been formed to probe corruption allegations of Tk 800 billion involving the family of the deposed Awami League leader in various projects.
