ACC seeks wealth info of Benazir, Matiur

FE REPORT | Wednesday, 3 July 2024

The anti-graft watchdog has served separate notices to former police chief Benazir Ahmed and NBR official Matiur Rahman and some family members seeking details about their assets within 21 working days.
This notice is part of an ongoing enquiry into the accumulation of their ill-gotten wealth, according to the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC).
ACC secretary Khorsheda Yasmeen disclosed the information at a press briefing at the state entity's Segunbagicha headquarters in Dhaka on Tuesday.
"Former IGP Benazir Ahmed and his wife along with their two daughters have been notified by the ACC to submit statements of their movable and immovable assets."
Regarding allegations of amassing wealth illegally, Ms Yasmeen said the ACC was conducting two separate enquiries into Benazir, Matiur and their families.
According to the notice, the ACC firmly believes that former IGP Benazir Ahmed and his wife along with their daughters have acquired significant assets/property under known and unknown names.
They are required to submit detailed statements to the Commission regarding their movable and immovable assets, liabilities, sources of income and details about their accumulation.
If the specified format of asset statement is not submitted within the stipulated time, or if a false statement is submitted, the notice says action will be taken under section 5(2) of the Anti-Corruption Commission Act 2004.
About allegations of corruption and illegal amassing substantial assets, Benazir and his family were directed to appear before the ACC on June 23 and 24.
They did not appear in person but submitted written statements through their legal representative.
It has been known from various sources that Benazir and his family members are currently staying abroad and have not returned to the country yet.
Earlier, Benazir was requested to appear for questioning on June 06, and his wife Jisan Mirza and two daughters on June 09.
However, they requested more time. Later, they were asked to appear on June 23 and 24.
Regarding the Matiur issue, Ms Yasmeen said, "NBR member Matiur Rahman, along with his two wives and children, has been served notices by the ACC to submit statements of their assets."
According to the notice, the ACC has a firm belief that Matiur and his family members have acquired significant assets/property under known and unknown names.
They are required to submit detailed statements to the Commission regarding their movable and immovable assets, liabilities, sources of income and details about their accumulation.
Ms Yasmeen said notices under section 26(1) of the ACC Act 2004 and section 17(1) of the ACC Rules 2007 have been issued to Matiur, his first wife Layla Kaniz, their son Ahmed Taufiqur Rahman Arnab, their daughter Farjana Rahman Insita, and second wife Shammi Akhtar Shibli regarding the submission of asset statements.
