ACC set to give clean chit to ex-secy Showkat

Saturday, 8 November 2014

In another alleged controversial move, the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) is going to relieve former Housing and Public Works secretary Dr Khondaker Showkat Hossain of the allegation of taking government plots abusing power, reports UNB.
“Many senior government officials, including secretaries and judges, have taken government plots violating rules. If a charge-sheet is submitted against Showkat, similar probes will have to be initiated against others who’ve taken plots violating rules,” an ACC senior official told the news agency wishing anonymity.
On April 22, 2014, the national anti-graft body filed three cases against Dr Showkat Hossain for reportedly taking government plots abusing power.
Nearly seven months after the launching of the investigation, the ACC investigation officer has prepared a report on the graft allegation of Showkat recommending the Commission not to submit a charge-sheet before court against him.
Dr Iftekharuzzaman, executive director of Transparency International Bangladesh (TIB), said the ACC’s move to relieve Showkat of graft charges is illogical and deceitful.
“They (all accused) concealed information and cheated the authorities concerned in taking government plots. This is a corruption. The ACC should initiate probes against all of them who have taken government plots violating rules because our constitution states that nobody is above the law,” he said.
